Evaluating UK Trading Platforms Beyond Commission-Free Marketing

Forbes published its 2026 roundup of free UK trading platforms this week, and on the same news cycle Bitget moved its copy trading product to an invitation-only model on its CFD venue.

Evaluating UK Trading Platforms Beyond Commission-Free Marketing

The two events are not comparable — one is a curated list, the other is a product gate. Both, however, are signals worth auditing against whatever platform you are currently running.

The list is a filter, not a verdict

By title alone, Forbes's "Best Free Trading Platforms In The UK For 2026" is a desk-count exercise. No execution metrics, no API coverage, no order routing disclosure live in the framing. The list functions as a starting set, not a shortlist. Before any platform from that list earns a funded account, four mechanical checks apply:

  • Commission line: advertised zero-commission trades hide spread markup, FX conversion fees, and guaranteed stop charges. Effective cost per fill is the only number that counts.
  • Order routing: market-maker, smart-routed, or direct market access. If the broker does not disclose the model, the spread is subsidising something downstream.
  • API surface: REST and WebSocket endpoints, rate limits, and FIX availability. A single REST endpoint advertised as "API access" is not a tooling stack.
  • Charting stack: native DOM depth, footprint, and volume profile. Anything requiring a third-party iframe is a patched workspace, not a trading desk.

The naive read — picking the cheapest name on the list — converges on the platform with the widest spread markup and the thinnest API. A list sorted by headline price is the inverse of how execution costs compound.

Bitget's gate

By its own positioning, Bitget is targeting pro traders with the invitation-only copy trading layer on its CFD platform. The gating behaviour — invite-only rather than open enrolment — is the only detail surfaced in the announcement. Everything else — eligibility criteria, execution SLAs, fee tier on the copied side — is undisclosed for now.

The copy layer sits on top of leveraged products, not a build anyone should run without a tight handle on margin and counterparty exposure. Worth tracking: whether the gated tier exposes order routing telemetry or only P&L, whether the retail copy pool gets thinned or absorbed, and how the invite-only criterion is enforced.

Verdict

Forbes lists venues. Bitget segmented its tier. Neither tells you which platform gives you deterministic fills, an audit-able fee line, and a scriptable API stack. Run the audit on your current broker before switching on the basis of a headline.
