Broker fees: why comparing total trading costs matters
A broker can advertise zero commission and still be the more expensive gateway to global markets.

The gap is often not visible in the ticket: it sits in a wider spread, a less favourable currency conversion, the daily financing charge on a leveraged position, or an account fee that begins to accrue when a portfolio is deliberately left untouched.
That distinction matters more as portfolios become international. A trader using CFDs for tactical index exposure, holding gold through a macro cycle, buying ADRs in US dollars from a euro-denominated account, and maintaining cash for emerging-markets opportunities is not making one isolated trade. They are operating a portfolio across several liquidity pools, currencies and holding periods. Comparing broker fees properly means measuring that entire system of costs, rather than selecting the lowest number in a marketing headline.
The illusion of zero commission: spreads versus execution
The central error in a brokerage fee comparison is to treat an explicit commission as the whole price of execution. It is merely the most legible component.
A standard forex account may advertise commission-free trading while quoting an average EUR/USD spread of roughly 0.7 to 1.5 pips. A raw-spread or ECN-style account can show pricing from around 0.0 to 0.2 pips, then levy a commission commonly in the range of $4.50 to $7.00 per round-turn lot. Neither structure is inherently cheaper. The relevant question is how often the investor trades, what size they trade, and how sensitive the strategy is to entry and exit friction.
For a short-horizon currency strategy, a few tenths of a pip can matter more than an apparently modest ticket commission. For a portfolio manager placing infrequent, larger directional positions, the all-in outcome may be closer than the headline account types suggest. The analysis must start with executable pricing, not advertised minimums.

The spread is not static. It can widen sharply during market stress, around major macroeconomic releases, at rollover, or when liquidity thins in less actively traded instruments. This is especially relevant beyond the most liquid G10 currency pairs. Access to emerging-markets currencies, smaller equity indices or commodity-linked instruments may look broad on a platform, yet the cost of accessing that universe can be substantially higher than the cost of trading the broker’s flagship EUR/USD or US index CFD.
Execution quality belongs in the same calculation. A nominally zero-commission venue may route orders to alternative exchanges or liquidity sources with less depth than the primary market. The result can be a wider effective bid-offer spread or weaker fills at the moment an order reaches the market. The issue is not that every commission-free model is inferior; it is that the displayed commission says little about the liquidity actually available to the client.
The cheapest ticket is not necessarily the cheapest execution; the difference is paid in the price received, not always in a line item.
For investors trading listed global equities, the analysis must extend further. An attractive commission schedule for US shares can be diluted by foreign-exchange charges, exchange-specific levies, custody costs or the limited availability of local listings. Buying a US-listed ADR may offer efficient access to an overseas company, but it does not automatically replicate the economics of trading the underlying local share. Currency exposure, trading hours and liquidity conditions remain part of the broker cost breakdown.
Overnight swaps can dominate leveraged portfolios
Spreads and commissions are entry costs. Overnight financing is a holding-period cost, and on leveraged products it can become the decisive variable.
A swap, often called rollover financing, is debited or credited when a position is held beyond the broker’s daily market close. The rate reflects underlying interest-rate differentials, funding conditions and the broker’s own markup. It changes over time. There is no single, durable number that can be used to rank every provider or every instrument, particularly for exotic currency pairs, gold, energy contracts and equity indices.
This is where a trading style that looks sound on a daily chart can become structurally expensive. A position in a leveraged gold CFD may be intended as a multi-week macro hedge. A long equity-index position may be held through an earnings season. A currency trade may be built around a central-bank divergence rather than an intraday catalyst. In each case, daily financing accumulates while the investor waits for the thesis to play out.
The practical hierarchy is straightforward:
1. Intraday traders should concentrate on spreads, commissions, slippage and the consistency of execution during active hours. Overnight swaps are largely irrelevant if positions are closed before rollover.
2. Swing traders need to model both the round-turn transaction cost and the likely financing bill over the expected holding period. A trade held for five sessions has a different economic profile from one closed the same afternoon.
3. Macro and hedging portfolios should treat financing as a strategic constraint. A leveraged index hedge held for months can lose its usefulness if the recurring cost is large enough to erode the protection it is meant to provide.
4. Carry-oriented FX strategies need special care. A positive swap credit can be part of the investment case, but it is not a fixed yield. Broker markups and changing central-bank expectations can alter the economics without changing the trader’s position.
5. Unleveraged equity investors may have less direct swap exposure, but they can still face analogous drag through margin interest, custody fees and currency conversion when financing international holdings.
The crucial point is that leveraged access changes the calendar of costs. A share investor can hold an asset while evaluating its fundamental trajectory; a CFD trader is also paying—or receiving—an interest-rate-linked cash flow every day. These are not interchangeable forms of market access, even when the price chart looks identical.
A broker’s cross-margin capabilities may reduce the amount of idle collateral required across related positions, but they do not remove financing economics. Efficient margin architecture can improve capital use. It cannot make a persistently expensive holding period disappear.
Currency conversion is a portfolio-level commission
Foreign exchange is often the least visible charge in an international account, precisely because it is embedded in the mechanics of buying assets rather than presented as a trading commission. Yet for a globally diversified portfolio, conversion can be recurrent: cash is moved from the account’s base currency into dollars for US shares, into sterling for UK securities, or into another currency for regional exposure.
Published conversion charges vary materially. At the low end, Interactive Brokers has cited conversion costs from 0.02%. Saxo Bank’s figure has been cited at 0.25%, while some providers charge 0.5% or up to 1.0% depending on the service and account structure. The difference may appear secondary beside equity-market volatility. Over repeated purchases, dividend reinvestment, portfolio rebalancing and eventual repatriation, it becomes a persistent drag on international allocation.
Consider the structure rather than a single transaction. An investor converts euros into US dollars to purchase a basket of US technology shares and ADRs, later sells part of the position, and converts proceeds back into euros. If the broker applies a percentage fee in both directions, the conversion layer is paid twice. If the account subsequently buys Japanese or UK-listed exposure, the cycle repeats.
This does not mean a multi-currency account is always preferable. Maintaining balances across currencies can create operational complexity and leave residual cash uninvested. But it does mean that a broker offering cheap domestic share dealing may be a poor fit for a portfolio whose strategic purpose is geographic diversification.
Other non-trading charges sit nearby:
- Withdrawal fees can range from no charge at some providers to around €30 at others. Their practical impact depends on how frequently capital is moved rather than on the size of any single trade.
- Deposit and withdrawal conditions may differ by payment rail, account currency and jurisdiction. A free bank transfer does not imply a free card withdrawal, and neither necessarily covers intermediary bank charges.
- Administrative fees can emerge in unusual but relevant situations. IC Markets, for example, has disclosed a €30 administrative fee for clients who repeatedly deposit and withdraw funds without placing trades.
- Exchange, data and platform charges may matter for investors seeking direct access to specialist markets, real-time market data or specific order-routing arrangements.
The institutional habit is to separate the cost of the trade from the cost of maintaining access to the market. Retail platforms increasingly bundle those elements into polished interfaces. The underlying economics remain separate.
Inactivity and custody fees punish different types of investor
Inactivity charges are often discussed as an annoyance. For a globally oriented investor, they are better understood as a mismatch between account design and portfolio behaviour.
A tactical trader may transact frequently enough never to encounter the fee. A long-term investor, by contrast, may intentionally hold a diversified allocation through periods of low activity. If a broker begins charging after three, six or 12 months without trading, it is effectively penalising restraint.
The range is wide. Some brokers have charged around €10 per month following a defined period of inactivity; EXANTE has cited a €50 monthly charge after 90 days in certain circumstances. By contrast, Interactive Brokers does not charge an inactivity fee, and Saxo Bank removed its inactivity fee in 2024. The distinction cannot be dismissed as a minor administrative detail. For a smaller dormant balance, a recurring monthly levy can represent a material percentage of capital over a year.
Custody fees raise a different issue. They apply not because the investor is inactive, but because the investor continues to hold assets. Saxo Bank’s Classic account has been associated with a 0.15% annual custody fee. Percentage-based platform fees can appear small in isolation, but their effect compounds over long horizons.
A 0.15% annual drag is not a dramatic market event. It is precisely why it is dangerous: it operates quietly, regardless of whether the portfolio has a good or bad year. Over decades, the cumulative difference between a low-cost custody structure and a higher-fee one can be substantial, particularly where the investor is using the platform for broad exposure to global equities, ETFs and bonds rather than for active derivatives trading.
A long-term portfolio does not avoid costs by trading less if its broker charges for the privilege of holding it.
This is also where the distinction between platform access and portfolio construction becomes clear. A broker may offer an extensive asset list—US shares, European exchanges, bonds, options, FX and international ETFs—yet price that breadth through custody fees, FX spreads or market-specific charges. Another may offer fewer markets but a more favourable all-in structure for the assets an investor actually intends to own.
The superior choice depends on strategic reach. A portfolio concentrated in one domestic market may prioritise a different cost profile from one designed to balance US growth exposure, European industrials, Asian supply-chain themes and emerging-markets allocations.
How to audit a broker’s total cost of ownership
To compare broker fees meaningfully, the investor should build the comparison around a representative year of activity rather than an illustrative trade shown on a pricing page.
Start by defining the actual portfolio architecture: markets, instruments, turnover, base currency, expected leverage and intended holding periods. A broker cost breakdown becomes useful only after those variables are explicit.
A practical audit can be run in five stages.
1. Map every asset class to its pricing schedule.
Do not assume that the broker’s FX terms apply to index CFDs, or that its US equity commission represents the cost of trading European stocks, options or ADRs. Separate listed securities, CFDs, spot FX, futures, funds and bonds. Global access is valuable, but each access route has its own fee logic.
2. Calculate the all-in entry and exit cost.
For each representative trade, combine the quoted spread, explicit commission, exchange charges where applicable and an allowance for realistic execution rather than the narrowest advertised spread. The calculation should be based on the trade sizes and instruments actually used.
3. Add the holding-period charge.
For leveraged positions, model daily swap or financing costs over a conservative holding period. Use the current broker schedule as a snapshot, while recognising that rates can change. For margin accounts holding securities, include the broker’s margin rate rather than treating leverage as free purchasing power.
4. Model the currency path.
Record the account base currency, asset currency and expected frequency of conversion. A US-dollar asset in a euro account is not a one-time FX event if the position is regularly rebalanced or dividends are converted. Investors allocating internationally should test the cost of conversion in both directions.
5. Stress-test low-activity periods.
Ask what happens if the portfolio is held untouched for a year, or if capital is reduced and later withdrawn. This reveals inactivity charges, custody costs, minimum-balance rules and withdrawal fees that never appear in a headline commission comparison.
The aim is not to identify a universally cheapest broker. There is no such broker because trading costs are conditional on behaviour. An ECN account may be efficient for high-frequency FX execution and poor for a lightly used, multi-year investment allocation. A zero-commission equity platform may suit regular purchases in one currency while becoming expensive for an investor rotating capital across several markets. A sophisticated multi-asset broker may justify higher explicit fees if it provides deeper market access, efficient financing and better currency handling for a complex portfolio.
The strategic meaning of “cheap”
Broker pricing should be evaluated as portfolio infrastructure. The question is not whether a platform can make one trade appear inexpensive; it is whether the platform can support the intended allocation without imposing a structural drag on returns.
For active traders, that usually means tight executable spreads, transparent commissions and reliable access to deep liquidity pools. For leveraged macro strategies, overnight swap rates and margin terms move to the centre of the analysis. For international investors, currency conversion and custody economics can outweigh the visible dealing commission. And for patient capital, inactivity rules reveal whether a broker is designed for investment or merely for activity.
The broadest asset menu is not automatically the best route to diversification, just as zero commission is not automatically the lowest total cost. A well-chosen broker is one whose fee architecture matches the portfolio’s geography, instruments and time horizon—allowing exposure to global opportunity without letting hidden trading costs become the portfolio’s most consistent source of underperformance.
